Warning: Some small spoilers
When the new Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: A Brand New Day, came to theaters on July 31st, more than 13 million people rushed to see it. On the first weekend, the movie broke the highest-grossing (money before tax) record with $360 million from the box office, even topping Avengers: Endgame, with Tom Holland (Peter Parker) and Zendaya’s (MJ) impeccable on-and-off-screen chemistry having such a heartbreaking effect. The previous movie in the franchise, Spider-Man: Far From Home, ends with Peter Parker’s tearful goodbyes to MJ and Ned, as the world forgets who he is. Peter is left to his own devices, living alone fresh out of high school with no one to accompany him in this new chapter of life. This new plot twist captures your attention and sucks you right back into Peter Parker’s new world of solitude. After watching, some people even say that it’s the best movie of the Spider-Man franchise. Despite not seeing any of the other Marvel movies, Lillian Scher (288) said, “I was confused by the plot at first, but it was really interesting to watch. By the end of it, my friends and I thought, ‘best movie we’ve ever watched.’” It turns out, a lot of people went to see the movie without having watched anything else from Marvel. Going into the theater not knowing what to expect is daunting, but nearly everyone walked out having unlocked a whole new world. Bela Marcus (288) and Ivan Lu (288) told me, “It was so crazy when they did the handshake,” and “It was a work of cinema.” Overall, Spider-Man: A Brand New Day charmed so many people, new fans and old ones. The cliffhanger ending leaves you with a bittersweet but heartwarming feeling that might just be able to last the next decade it takes for the sequel.
