Central Girls Varsity Soccer

By- Peter Frankunas (283) & Layla Jamo-Cohen (283)

The Girls Varsity Soccer Team led by Coach John started off the year strong, undefeated after winning their first 7 games. The reigning Public League Champions kicked off their season with an impressive win against Franklin Towne Charter 4-1. “It’s always a big game when we play Franklin Towne Charter,” said Coach Johns, the team’s coach for the last ten years. According to Coach Johns, out of the past 25 Girls Varsity Soccer Public League Championship games, 24 of them have been Central vs. Franklin Towne.

More recently, the team won three games against Kensington High, Masterman, and the Science Leadership Academy (SLA). Coach Johns admitted he was nervous prior to the match against SLA, but those nerves disappeared when Central took the lead at the end of the game to win 3-2. “We won with two goals in the last three minutes,” Coach Johns proudly added. It was a close game, but the team pulled through and secured the win.

According to Coach Johns, “Graduation hit us hard last year.” The team lost 11 seniors who helped them win both the Public League and the District 12 championships. However, the team has “a number of returning players who are really helping the team,” including captains Sara Hogan (282), Fiona Fuller (282), and Tessa Bensley (283).

Coach Johns surely brought a punch (and his bucket hat) to the league this year. His prediction for the team this season? “I think we should go deep into the Public League playoffs, if not make it to the championship.” He told us, “We have some growing pains but we will get through them.” If growing pains are 7 and 0 then we certainly have high hopes for Coach Johns and his team this year.
