Central’s school pride is one of the things that makes our school special. Our athletic atmosphere is just as notable. With thirty-three sports and many championships across the board, athletics at Central are truly something unique.
One-third of the school’s sports take place in the spring, with a little over half being varsity sports. These are teams that go back multiple decades, playing a crucial part in Central’s history.
With a four-year-long streak, varsity girls’ badminton has retained the title of Public League Champions from 2022 to 2025, leading to an exciting season to watch this spring. On the topic of racket sports, with two of the girls’ players going to states this year, Central’s tennis teams are nothing to mess around with. After protecting their Public League title last year, the boys’ varsity tennis team will start this spring under Mr. Horwits. Another net sport taking place in the spring is boys’ varsity volleyball.
Moving onto field sports, with both varsity and junior varsity, baseball and softball will start their season on the baseball field this spring. Girls’ varsity lacrosse will also pick up this spring. This lacrosse team is one of the best, with back-to-back Public League Championships from 2022 and 2023 under its belt. Adding another varsity sport to the count, boys’ varsity lacrosse will start its upcoming season. And, if you’re looking to get cardio in, the boys’ and girls’ varsity track and field will also take place in the spring.
But what are Central sports without pep? The pep squad is a year-round step team that participates in different sports. You may have seen their Step-A-Grams in some of your classes throughout the year.
To give an insight into the anticipation for these spring sports, lacrosse player Nora Walkiewicz (286) said she is “super excited for lacrosse this year” and that “it’s the perfect warm season to end the school year off with.” She remarked how “it brings so much community and teamwork together” and how she is hoping for a championship this season.
Central’s spring sports will be exciting to watch with inevitable championship wins, so make sure to tune in. More information and schedules for these sports can be found on Central’s website and the sports’ individual Instagram pages.
