On November 3, 2025, members of the senior class gathered on Central’s patio for the annual senior sunrise event.

The special occasion begins with seniors setting their alarms for an earlier-than-usual time to ensure they make it to school by 6:45-7:00 am. After students arrive, the main events they partake in are eating breakfast (this year, donuts), standing to form their class number for a yearbook photo, and a tree planting ceremony.

Senior sunrise is a fairly new addition to Central’s list of traditions. Mr. Horwits (251), the 285 class sponsor and main organizer of the event, shared that it started with the class of 281 because “coming out of the pandemic, [they] were looking to do events … in a safe way,” and outdoor events were the way to go. He also highlighted that the event gives “kids an opportunity to be leaders and to feel like they’re a part of something special.”

Due to unfortunate weather conditions, this year’s event was moved to after the ending of daylight savings time, meaning that the sun had already risen by the time students arrived. Despite not being able to witness the actual sunrise, the general sentiment of seniors seems to be quite positive. Emma Hawthorne (285) said that for her, waking up early was “worth it… for the photo.” She continued, saying that “it’s symbolic because together we are 285.” Jake Benny (285) shares a similar perspective, having said, “I feel like it’s a memory that’s passed down, every class does it, we’re adding ourselves to history,” demonstrating his appreciation of the  sentimental value.

Aside from the sentimental aspects of the tradition, it seems that Central seniors also cherish the time they are able to spend with their classmates. Elizabeth Jack (285) noted that she really enjoyed “seeing all of [her] peers in one place,” which is a unique experience for seniors, as “normally we’re so spread out.” Emma also shared that for her, sunrise was “a lot of fun” and that she made “a lot of memories.”

All in all, it seems that Senior Sunrise is a valued tradition among the Central community, and there are no signs of its termination. Hopefully, future classes of seniors will enjoy just as much as 285!
