At Central, the student body never fails to impress us with their incredible accomplishments and performances, and that’s especially true in regard to the cross country team’s admirable victory this season.
As the fall athletics season comes to an end, and winter sports begin, our cross country team was pleased to announce that they had secured a remarkable sweep at the Public League Championships. On October 17th, our skilled runners headed to the starting line at Belmont Plateau and were tasked to complete a 5k. Although the race was challenging, as they were competing against talented runners for 3.1 miles, our team managed to finish strong, gaining good times all around.
In particular, our team had eighteen runners whose times qualified them for medals, with two runners: Nathaniel Johnstone (284) and Lola Serrano-Martinez (284), being the individual champions of the varsity boys’ and varsity girls’ finals. With their combined scores, the boys topped their division by a close two points, and the girls topped their division by an astounding difference of thirty-one points.
When asked about his feelings towards his great achievement, Nathaniel exclaimed that “Winning the individual title felt incredible, but I am much more proud of our victory on a team front. The win required everyone to step up in unprecedented and daunting ways, which people did, nearly all of the guys on the team running the fastest they had run all season. We’ve now won for the past three consecutive years now, but if I am being honest, no win felt as powerful as this one, our guys narrowly capturing the title by a mere two-point victory.”
We are immensely proud of the dedication and hard work that our runners and coaches have put into this season and wish all Central athletes good luck in the winter season!
