As prom approaches for juniors and seniors, so does the big question many will ask: “Will you go to prom with me?” But the bigger question is, how does one go about asking this? There are several approaches below organized by love languages. Use the
options that correspond with your crush’s preferred one and I guarantee you’ll get a yes.

Gift Giving:

  • Do NOT get flowers. This is the first step to rejection. Getting them flowers means they have another thing to take care of on top of their hectic schedule how inconsiderate of you.

Chocolate is a no.

  • Obviously, everyone HATES chocolate. If you really want to give them food, I recommend giving them their least favorite. Why? Because it won’t take the focus off of you… their least favorite food ensures they won’t like it more than they like you.

Words of Affirmation:

  • Puns…no, no, no, no, NO. Not punny. (Well, except that one). Don’t let them see you’re fun—prom is definitely not supposed to be fun.

Posters are not ideal:

  • Who wants a thoughtful handmade poster when you could just get a text? My personal favorite is just a simple “prom?” with no context or care. Trust me, it works

Physical Touch:

  • Make sure they know dancing is a no-go. They will be relieved to hear this. Prom will be way better if you just sit there and watch others. In some cases, annoyance will be the best route. When the bell rings and it’s time to switch classes, quickly cling onto their legs and make them drag you across the hallway. Don’t let go until they say yes.

Quality Time:

  • STALK THEM! Know their schedule, their bus route, their extracurriculars, and definitely their address. This is the best way to show your commitment.
  • Leading up to your proposal, DON’T hangout or talk to them at all. The surprise factor makes it ten times more special.

Acts of Service:

  • Go out and buy some roses. This one requires a lot of prep: line all your friends up on either side of the hallway, each of them with a rose. Make your crush grab each rose on the path to you. Not awkward, not embarrassing, not over the top—it’s perfect.
  • The best thing you could possibly do is pop the question in front of the ENTIRE school. An audience of 2,500+ is the perfect way to ensure intimacy. No pressure at all!
