The coldest time of the year calls for some heartwarming hot chocolate! Whether you are fighting off the freezing cold while braving the outdoors or simply need a cozy place to be productive, here are a few places to take advantage of this winter season for some delicious hot chocolate.

Shane Confectionery: 110 Market St

While you are at the Winterfest at Penn’s Landing, you can’t miss the oldest candy store in America just a couple blocks away! Established in 1863, Shane Confectionery has been producing authentic chocolate right from its kitchen. From a signature flavor, to dark chocolate and even cinnamon & chili pepper, there is a chocolatey flavor for whatever you are craving. Each flavor is deeply rich, and comes out steaming—as hot chocolate should be. For a dollar extra each, you can get a ginormous house-made marshmallow and the tastiest whipped cream. This hot chocolate experience may be on the pricier side, but its history and top-notch quality makes it all worth it.

La Colombe: 130 S 19th St, 100 S Independence Mall W #100, 1414 S Penn Square, 1335 Frankford Ave

With its locations ranging across Center City to Fishtown, regardless of what neighborhood you’re headed towards, there may be a La Colombe near you! Although La Colombe is nationally known for its top-tier coffee, it turns out they also have some of the most appetizing hot chocolate. “Balanced” perfectly describes this cup of hot cocoa. It is not too heavy nor thick, which makes it the best beverage for when you don’t want something too filling. It still has that impeccable, sweet, milk chocolate taste that just makes you want more. No matter the location, there is a very calming and welcoming atmosphere, with plenty of tables to sit and sip at. Its very low price does not compare to its exceedingly rich features.

Rim Cafe: 1172 S 9th St

This iconic and assorted cafe in South Philly has much to offer. As soon as their hot chocolate hits your tongue, you won’t believe its creamy deliciousness. With a wide variety of decadent toppings and mouth-watering flavors, your phone will certainly be eating first! The taste is truly luscious and lives up to Rim Cafe’s name. Not only is the hot chocolate unbelievable, but it is almost crucial to get one of their authentic cannolis on the side. The cafe’s interior is unique with vibrant decorations that cover every space on the walls, making the atmosphere as special as its menu. The drink’s value is worth every penny!

Gran Caffe L’aquila: 1716 Chestnut St

In the heart of Rittenhouse, Gran Cafee L’aquila’s hot chocolate truly provides the most chocolatey experience. For such a reasonable price, it is shocking how amazing this hot chocolate will make you feel! The flavor is not too sweet for your tastebuds and certainly not too bitter. It is obvious that it’s made with bona fide chocolate based on its rich thickness—after all, it comes with a spoon for a reason! Delilah Forman (285) says, “It’s so rich and thick, it’s like a soup.” The cafe’s outdoor heated seating creates an environment just as warm and comforting as the hot chocolate.

Elixr Coffee: 207 S Sydenham St, 315 N 12th St, 3675 Market St, 1600 Market St

At each Elixr Coffee location, whether it is in West Philly or Center City, you’re able to get your hands on hot chocolate that feels like home. With its powerful flavor and soothing texture, you cannot go wrong! It is the perfect “classic” hot chocolate that is not too heavy and has a genuine sweet taste. The establishment’s modern ambiance, combined with this delicious drink, will make you feel warmer on these cold winter days.

As I explored local and unique cafes to Philly-based chain establishments, the conclusion is clear—there are plenty of hot chocolate options for you to choose from! If you’re ever feeling indecisive this winter and don’t know where to get a warm drink worth your money, you now have a hot chocolate guide to some of the most remarkable spots around the city.
