One of Central’s recent additions to the History Department is Mark Smith, who has been teaching African American History for nearly a year. Previously an instructional aide in an autistic support room for eight years, he embraced his responsibilities and the opportunity to have a more profound impact on his students.

Mr. Smith began considering teaching after realizing he was dissatisfied with a tedious nine-to-five. Encouraged by his high school principal and athletic director, he started coaching football, leading to a newfound connection with student-athletes and transitioning into pursuing a career in education. Having completed his undergrad at Shippensburg University and graduate school at Drexel University, Mr. Smith believes Central effectively prepares students for life in college.

Outside of teaching, Mr. Smith spends much of his dedicated time with his two sons, as he believes that the ability to balance his work and personal life is incredibly important. The mandated community service at Central allows students to gain valuable life skills such as time management and juggling various responsibilities.

Switching schools primarily brought the chance to exert a positive influence on his students. He “didn’t expect the diversity” at Central and emphasizes its importance in preparing students for the real world by exposing them to different perspectives and experiences. He states, “being able to work together in the same environment with people of different ethnicities is very beneficial,” thus Mr. Smith prioritizes creating a comfortable and interactive atmosphere, promoting independence while utilizing students’ ability to express their opinions to facilitate discussions.

Values such as maintaining a safe and open setting, fostering respect for diverse views, and encouraging civil discourse all guide Mr. Smith’s teaching philosophy. He accommodates students’ individual needs by engaging in conversations beyond the curriculum, understanding their backgrounds, and adapting his teaching methods for success.

Mr. Smith stands out as a passionate educator at Central High School, harmonizing his professional and personal life while teaching students to do the same. Shaping the minds of his students, he prepares them for a successful future beyond the classroom.
