As temperatures drop and Central’s outdoor fall sports end, winter athletics are just getting started. One of our indoor athletic programs, the wrestling team, has begun their preseason work in preparation for this year’s long, grueling season. To find out how the Lancers are looking this year, we asked several of the team’s experienced wrestlers about their hopes and expectations for this season.
Maxwell Gearhart-Robboy (283) is going into his third season, and he served as team captain his junior year. He competes in the 160 lbs. weight class. As a veteran senior on the team, he is motivated to put together the team’s strongest season yet. “This season,” Max says, “I hope to work hard and work with intent. I don’t want to set any goals because it’s about the process. I want to stay after every practice and do at least five extra shots. That’s my goal.” Max is eager to see what Central’s new wrestlers, notably two football players and one particularly athletic freshman, can do. When asked if he had any advice for the younger wrestlers on the team, Max said, “I just want the other wrestlers to know that it’s hard, but anything worth doing is hard.”
Brandon Inga (283) is entering his second year as a wrestler and expects to compete in the 172 lbs. weight class. Regarding his goal for the season, he says, “Just beat Northeast, man. That’s always what we want to do.” The Lancers, he explained, have been trying to defeat Northeast since he arrived as a freshman, and he wants to finally conquer Central’s arch-rival. Like Max, Brandon is excited to see what the new wrestlers are able to bring to the team. When asked to rate his enthusiasm for this upcoming season on a scale from one to ten, Brandon’s response was a confident “eleven.”
Matthew Dougherty (284) is going into his third wrestling season, and he anticipates participating in either the 172 lbs. or 189 lbs. weight class. When asked what his favorite part of the sport was, Matt said he simply enjoyed “[wrestling] the boys.” He has a specific goal for this season: he wants to place third in the Public League tournament. We asked Matt who on the team he was most excited to see compete this season, and he said, “Chris Misko. I’m excited to see where he goes this year.”
Best of luck to Max, Brandon, Matt, and all of Central’s other wrestlers! Make sure to cheer them on this season as they take on the Public League, and as always, BEAT NORTHEAST!
