Kylie Cannon (284)

It’s your favorite CHS tradition, the girls’ flag football game of Powderpuff! But, what exactly goes into this event? Well, there’s one thing for sure, which is that these girls were practicing. The girls from 283 and 284 practice in advisory multiple times a week, being coached by players on the football team. Being outside, stretching, running around, and learning the rules of football is a great way to start the day. Learning offensive and defensive plays, as well as creating strong bonds between teammates, are important factors for each team’s success. The ability to hang out and laugh with friends while being active and strengthening your team makes for an exhilarating activity before classes even begin.

I was curious as to why Powderpuff was so important to these girls and if it represented something bigger to them, seeing as they dedicated hours of practice to the event. When asked about why Powderpuff mattered, Gina Burtulato (284) told me that her participation in Powderpuff represents girls being able to come together and create their own sense of teamwork and good sportsmanship. Gina pointed out that when you typically think of football, you usually do not think of a group of women, especially not young women at that. Powderpuff is about girls cheering each other on. I also asked this question to one of the girls playing from 283. She said that, to her, Powderpuff is one of the last cherished memories she gets to experience with her close friends from high school. While reminiscing about the four long years they have weathered together, Powderpuff served as a great opportunity to have a few more laughs before they all go their separate ways.

Before, girls weren’t even allowed to attend Central. Powderpuff serves as a symbol of the opportunities that have been created for girls to have fun and show school spirit. Don’t be afraid to participate next year if Powderpuff interests you, and make sure to congratulate these 283 and 284 girls on their hard work!
